Weekly update for August 21

I hope everyone is having a better week than I am! That wouldn't take much! LOL

We have had 11 Intakes for the month and 149 for the year. Luckily this week was calmer than the last. Monday we got in Rebel a 12 wk old female tabby with the fat stripes. Then we got in Zorra (that name sends shivers up my spine - too much like Zorro! lol) a female black & white who looks like "10 miles of bad road"! She has been a lot in her short life and you see it in the scars on her face. She is very sweet and affectionate.

We are supposed to be getting a couple of returns in the coming days. Dorian is supposed to come back today because grandson is allergic. Then Sneakers was supposed to come back yesterday. She is a kitten from 2005. Anyone remember Moma Cass & Misty taking turns nursing 9 kittens that all looked a like?!

We have settled on names for the Main St Exit litter. Flame of course is the orange tabby, Christian is the swirled tabby with the perfect cross on his back, and Pandora is the tabby female.

Outs
We have had 9 adoptions for the month and 111 for the Year. Murry the dog went to his new home last Wed. Then on Sunday Snoopy adopted a 12 yr old boy. I think they will be great friends! Then Rosie the dog went to her new home in Marion this Wed. She will be back in a month for a week to get her final HW treatment. Then Apache will be going to her new home today I believe.

Sadly, Smokey lost his fight with fatty liver disease last week.

Events
Our Fall Yard Sale will be held Sept 26 & 27 from 8-5pm both days at Kram-Den Storage. If anyone is interested in helping Diane Taylor with the sale or working the Sanctuary on Friday be sure to let us know. Remember there is much to be done; signs, baked goods or other refreshments, pricing and sorting. We can never have too many signs!

We still need volunteers for Adoption Day at Petco on Sat Sept 13th. Don't forget we still volunteers for the remaining months ahead too.

Pet of the Week
I haven't been getting much of a response from all of you when we have to pick cats. Belita & Kelly suggested Lucky or Alice. Lucky will be the next Pet of the Week. See if you can tell who is actually pictured in the photo! lol
We are back to dogs for the next vote and the pickens are getting slim. Who will be our next Pet of the Week? Daisy, Ebony or Gypsy? Be sure to vote for your favorite.

Staffing
Chad & Stacey will not be there this week. So I am looking forward to seeing Ed & Tyler, Jaesa, and possibly Meagan.

Hope everyone has a great week! As always your feedback is welcome, good or bad.

Update for August 14

Hi All

I hope everyone is having a great week and enjoying this beautiful weather we have been having. I have had a busy week on a personal level and so has SHAS.

Pet of the Week
Because of my personal life being so hectic I wasn't able to get out an email in time for everyone to vote for Pet of the Week. Since we needed a dog and Spuds was the runner up for the last dog vote I decided to feature Spuds. Look for him in this coming Sunday paper in the Lifestyles section.

Next we need another cat. Instead of us all suggesting our favorites then I end up with 20 cats with 1 vote each, I think we need to pick a theme. Our favorite black, black & white, tabby, orange, long hair or short hair, or kitten. I am open to suggestions.

I am thinking of featuring a kitten since we did Sparky, an adult last time. So who is your favorite kitten? I want to hear from the kids too!!! This is one place where the kid vote counts too! Remember we have a few new kittens.

Population

Ins
We have had 10 Intakes for the month and 147 for the Year. Last week I reported Toby, an adult black male, coming in and Michelle coming to us from foster care. Friday we got Ridge a DMH cream colored guy about the size of Apache. Next came Aimee, white & striped tabby, looks a little like Lucinda or Chopper, followed by Baxter a black and white male from Scott City. Baxter & Cricket (Lucky & Alice's mom) look a lot a like and hard to tell apart.

Then last Sat we got 3 kittens found on the I-55, at the Main St Exit (we got 3 kittens last year from the same place). Flame is orange, Swirl, for lack of a better name has big fat swirly stripes & a perfect cross on his back, and a female tabby. We need several names. Alice took in an orange & white female bottle feeder about the same size as the 8 from Old Appleton.

We also got in Darrell, a orange and white male who's owner is terminal. Then Gypsy a shepherd/hound mix (possibly beagle). We are also getting another cat who is having his hind leg amputated. I suspect he will go to Alice's house until he has recovered from his surgery.

Is anyone counting? That makes 10 animals In, I think. lol

Outs
We have had 7 Adoptions for the month and 109 for the Year. Last week I reported Mixey & Blitz being adopted. Then I adopted Gretchen out on Sat afternoon, she is now named Brooklyn. Kim Leslie adopted Mackeny & Bailey the torties she fostered. Murry the dog was adopted by a young man on Wed. And Apache has been spayed and will be going to her new home today or tomorrow.

Events
Alice will taking a cat to be on KFVS12 at noon for the Pet Segment. Be sure to set your VCR/Tivos.

We still need volunteers for Adoption Day at Petco for September and the remaining months.

Diane Taylor is taking charge of our Spring & Fall Yard Sales. She is collecting items, pricing & sorting. The Fall Yard Sale is scheduled for Sept 26 & 27 from 8-5pm both days. She needs volunteers to assist with pricing, set-up, and tear-down both days. We will also need additional volunteers to help with the shelter on Friday both shifts. If you would like to help Diane with this event please let Alice or myself know and we will put you in touch with Diane.
Anyone want to make signs? We can never have too many! Anyone want to make cookies or brownies to sell?

Staffing
I am hoping to see Chad & Staci this Sat along with Edward & Jaesa. Meagan let me know, sweetie.

Alice has requested that depending on man/woman power if we can manage to bring litter down from Kramden Storage and put inside the shelter and in the dog shed.

Just a reminder for everyone. If you are not able to work your regular shift please let us know asap. We all have other commitments and family things going on all the time. SHAS understands that and would never expect you to miss your cousin's wedding to scoop litterboxes or walk dogs (unless you want to miss your counsin's wedding! lol).

I worry about all of you just like I worry over the animals. If you are a no call/ no show, I really get scared. I think I speak for Alice, Belita, and Kelly as well, we care about each and every one of you!! Our volunteers are the ones who really keep SHAS going, where would the animals be without all of you to help them?!

I think that is it for this week. Hope everyone has a great weekend and get out there and enjoy the weather a bit.

E-ya later.

Tammy's Update for July 10

Hi All-

Hope everyone is having a great week! It has been a busy week at SHAS and the place looks really nice after the holiday clean-up crew did their magic.

I want to thank Kim Leslie, her husband Larry, Anthony Shell, Alice and anyone else I may have missed for the wonderful jobs they did on the Fourth. We now have clothes line poles and a vented dryer, they also cleaned up the scrap lumber that was between the food shed and the enclosures, as well as, cleaning up all the debris left by the ice storms. The place looks so wonderful! Purrrr, to you all!!!!

Population

Ins
Like I said it has been a busy week. Last Thursday we got in 2 dogs. Rosie a 2 yr old boxer that was starved and neglected. She definitely stirs my emotions. She is positive for heartworms and has to weigh 40 lbs before she can be treated for them. She is currently 32lbs. We also got in Daisy a 2 yr old yellow Lab. She is severely overweight and may have some problems with her hips. Then Kim Leslie took in 3 more bottle feeders. Next we got in Roma a young stray that was hanging around a local church, she was declawed & hopefully spayed, she was adopted the next day. Then Renee a brown tabby, was rescued after a good samaritan witnessed her brother being attacked by dogs. He had her spayed and tested. Sue the yellow tabby was returned due to illness (our vet found nothing wrong with her). Then Greysen the kitten from last year was returned for severe allergies. He, not she, is now a good looking boy named Cringer. Finally, comes Max the black kitten, he fell out of the back of a auto transport trailer on Hwy 72. That is 10 Intakes in a week! That makes 11 for the month of July and 111 for the Year. Oh Yeah! Alice brought Powder, Layla and the remaining Kinder Kitties back out to the Sanctuary.

Outs
Again it has been a busy week!! We had 7 Adoptions for the week & month and 84 for the Year. Sunday morning Kelly adopted out Cagney & Sterling to the same home. (Kelly, I hope you remembered to tell them not to feed the Gremlin after midnight and never get her wet?! lol) Then Lacey & Willow went to the same home. Homer was such a big hit as Pet of the Week that he went to his new home with Fury, one of the kittens Alice had at her house. Then Roma was adopted the day after she came to us.

Whew! I worked up a sweat just thinking about all the activity going on at SHAS this week! lol

Pet of the Week
I know I have been trying to alternate cats & dogs for the Pet of the Week. I only had one response for the next dog to be featured. So I have decided since Dakota also received more than half the votes for last week's spot that I will run him this week. Next week we need a dog. Marilyn has suggested Snoopy since he "was" the new kid. We also have Daisy, Velvet, Ebony, Spuds, & Duke. I will not run Rosie until she is looking healthier. Cade & Ruby have already been featured. So who shall it be? I like the voting process, so make sure you vote for one of the dogs.

Events
Be sure to make plans to attend the Petfinder & Petco sponsored Adoption Options workshop the following Friday August 1st from 9am to 5pm at the Arena Building.

I just went to http://www.petfinder.com/adoptionoptions
and signed up for the Adoption Options Workshop. It was very easy to do with my debit card.

The information you will need to get the $10 rate is as follows.
Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary
359 Cree Lane
Jackson, MO 63755
573-243-9823
Shelter ID#: MO336

(That is the letter O not the number 0, as in MO for Missouri).

Petco Adoption Day
Roberta along with Deanna and Zhou will be at Petco this Sat between 12pm - 4pm. (You do not have to be there the entire time slot.) Kim you can still bring your healthy kittens if you would like, too. Be sure to stop by to meet Roberta's dog and cheer on Safe Harbor and Silverwalk Hounds. Angela Shell will be doing KFVS12 Pet Segment with Alice on Friday July 18th. Set your Tivos and VCRs.

Staffing
Kara will be joining us for what could be her last time or next to last time this week. She will be missed by kitties and humans a like. Sniffle. I also hope to see Chad & Stacey, Meagan and Ed.

I hope everyone has a great rest of the week and be sure to meet all the new faces who joined us this past week.

Shelter Director's Diary ... Busy Thursday coming up

All-

A call from Belita last night reminded me I had not told anyone the
results of Rosie's vet visit. Rosie is a bone thin Boxer starveling
that came to us a week ago. Her vet visit showed her to weigh 32.6
lbs. She is heartworm positive which did not surprise me. She is
around 2 years old and has had more than one litter. She will sit and
lie down on command. Very gentle, very frail. She will be treated for
heartworms, but she has to get some weight on. Dr Mohan says at least
40 lbs. Will take about a month for that. Right now she is getting
puppy food and canned food twice a day. She has had all her shots now.
Got her toenails trimmed. A pox on the people that treated her this way.

Sue was returned to us because she had been continuously ill and had
vomiting and diarrhea all the time. None since return. She looks
good. She also saw the vet. Found nothing wrong.

Renee was an outside cat that was rescued and spayed and then brought to
us. Her sibling was torn apart by dogs. Her rescuer took it to the vet
to be euthanized. Thus is the fate of many outside cats.

Roma was a cat that was found in the Fruitland Church yard. The family
that found this declawed tortie fed and loved her twice a day for a
week. They tirelessly looked for her owners and did not find anyone.
They brought her to us and gave $25. They are moving to Sikeston and
have 2 cats of their own. I gave her shot, Frontlined and wormed her and
the next day adopted her out for $75. Hurray!

Greysen (now Cringer) was adopted from us as a kitten and now returned
since the birth of their baby who is allergic. He is one handsome dude.

A black kitten fell out of a transport truck and Max found his way to us
through his rescuer.

Sally and Esther went to the vet for spay tomorrow. Will pick them up
in the afternoon.

Tomorrow am picking up 3 bottle babies whose Mama got killed. Right now
they are in foster care with Kim Leslie.

Being interviewed for the radio at 11am tomorrow. As you can see
Thursday is going to be 2 days long.

Still poking food down Smokey. Think everyone else is on the upswing.

Better wind things up. Have to get the kitties in from the screened in
porch.

Good night,

ALICE

July is here!

Hi, Everyone!

I hope everyone is having a great week in preparation for the coming holiday. Please remember to be safe and have fun!

Pet of the Week
I know everyone is anxious to know who won this week's Pet of the Week spot. The "special needs" winner is . . . Homer the blind kitten! He led the way with 10 votes, Dakota the amputee was the runner up with 7 votes, and poor Sophie came in last with 2.

Next week we need to feature one of our dogs . . . any ideas on who it shall be? Ebony, Velvet, Spuds, Duke or Snoopy. Shall we vote again?

Population
Currently we have 86 cats, 13 kittens, 9 dogs and 18 in Foster care.
There were 17 Intakes for the month of June and 100 for the Year. This includes 6 cats and 11 kittens.
We had 14 Adoptions for the month and 77 for the Year, including 5 cats, 8 kittens, and 1 puppy.

Intakes
We have had only 1 Intake since 06/21. Sox the cat/kitten came in on Wed. She was found by the Lil Country Store close to Egypt Mills by a good samaritan. She is being spayed and should be at SHAS later today. Also Esther the cat joined us from Foster Care this week. She is the mother of Isiah, Miriam, and Ruth. She is also very agressive to the cats, so be careful when letting her out-and-about. Last Friday I brought in the kittens that were being fostered by Kathy the Pet Guardian (I love that name - how appropriate! Purr!) They are Griswald-male tabby. Gretchen-female tabby, Willow-female gray, and Tiza-blue point siamese.

Alice has just informed me that we have 2 new dogs. A very thin female Boxer about a year old, her name is Rosy. And a chunky 2yr old female yellow lab, named Daisy.

Outs
Last Wed Cocoa the Siamese kitten was adopted from foster care. Then Sat afternoon, Kara the orange w/white kitten went to her new home.

We have several folks out looking at dogs. We have a family interested in Ruby - they are thinking it over. Then Wed I had folks who were interested in Spuds & Snoopy. They quickly decided against Spuds. He is such a handful that I fear he will be difficult to place.

Events
July 12th Roberta will be doing Petco with one of her dogs from Silverwalk Hounds. She will be joined by Deanna & Zhou. Kim Leslie may also be bringing the kittens she has been fostering. (Kim, Zhou is an expert kitten handler. Don't let her size fool you. lol)

Still need volunteers for the remaining months of the year. And still no takers to fill-in for Alice or assist her with KFVS12 Pet Segment on the 18th. Where are all our shining stars?!

July 4th is turning out to be a project day for SHAS. We have several volunteers coming out that day to work on some much needed projects. Kim Leslie & husband will be there installing the new clothes line poles and properly venting the dryer. Kim and Alice will also be clearing some of the brush and debris left behind by the winter's ice storms.

On Friday Aug 1st, Petfinder & Petco are sponsoring the Adoption Option workshop. It will be held from 9am-5pm at the Arena Building & 4-H Shelter. The cost is $10 for Petfinder members & $20 for individuals. I haven't read through the registration form to see what is required to qualify for the $10 rate. I promise to have that info to everyone by the next update.

Staffing
I think Kara will not be there this week. So I am looking forward to seeing Edward, Staci and possibly Chad. Meagan?? let me know girlfriend.

I wanted to let everyone know that we are losing one of our long-time Saturday morning volunteers. Kara Dietz-Sterling will be leaving us at the end of this month or possibly before. Her husband Scott has been accepted in a graduate program at Mazzoula University in Montana. I tried to talk her into staying with us while Scott attends school, but she is pretty hung-up on this newlywed thing. lol

Please join me in wishing Kara & Scott the very best that life can offer in this new adventure they are about to undertake. Kara, you will always have a home at Safe Harbor and in our hearts. The cats will definately miss their weekly beatings and how will we ever manage Kitten Season without you keeping everyone in line?!! We will all miss you very much!!!

I think that is all there is to report at this time. Hope everyone has a great week and a fun filled-safe Fourth of July.

Generous Donors and Volunteers! Update for 6/25

Hi All

Hope everyone is staying cool and getting to enjoy the warmer weather.

Safe Harbor has had several visitors recently come out to look at our facilities, ask a few questions, and give very generous donations. We have also started getting donations coming from our website through PayPal. One was for $500 from Mr Richard Felty in memory of "Itty Bitty". (His name will be added to the Patron's plaque that will soon go up in the Sanctuary.) Mr Felty also came out Sat afternoon to bring some collars and look around, he plans on returning to speak with Alice to get a better idea of our plans for the future. Purr!

Ins
For June we have taken in 17 animals and 100 for the year. Last week I reported Chester, a DMH tabby, joining the population. He was a bit hissy his first few days (like so many others) but he is calming down and settling in very nicely. Then Sat Kara's mom brought us Kara & Sterling. Kara is orange with white feet and Sterling is a tabby with the wide black swirly stripes (there is a name for it but I can't remember what it is). Sterling was our 100th Intake of 2008!! Last year Ebony the dog was our 100th on June 1st.

I forgot to mention last week about Snoopy, a black lab/shepherd mix, joining us. Snoopy has been fostered by board member Marilyn Neville since Oct 07. He comes to us by way of the Bollinger County Stray Project which is one of the many projects that Marilyn is involved with. He is a pretty sweet guy and he likes kids (little kids!!). He lit up when granddaughter Olivia went to greet him.

Outs
We have had 13 Adoptions for June and 75 for the year. Last Friday Ridley aka Wriggley, the puppy was adopted. Alice took Rascal, cream & white, to be on KFVS12 Pet Segment last Friday, he was adopted by a family in Thebes on Sunday. Yesterday, Cocoa, one of the siamese Kinder Kitties went to her new home. The remaining kittens, solid gray, 2 tabbies and a siamese will be coming in from fostercare Friday or Sat. I believe Ruth the tabby kitten who is currently at Angela's will go to her new home this weekend.

Staffing
If I am remembering correctly, Chad & Staci will not be there this weekend, nor will Kara. Or is it Edward? lol Memory fails me.

July 4th Kim L. & her husband will be coming out to put up new clothes line poles and vent the dryer! Purrr!! They are also going to do some cleaning up around the grounds and try to get rid of the brush piles.

I know that with gas prices going up and the economy in such a slump that it has put a strain on all of us. These are very trying times for everyone. We are feeling the effects with personal relationships changing, losing jobs, moving out of the area, and health issues. I just want to say that we appreciate the sacrifices that each and every one of you make for the animals of Safe Harbor and our surrounding community. It is because of your efforts that Safe Harbor is preparing to celebrate our 3rd year of service!! We have come a long way since those first days and we are still growing and learning everyday. Thank you for all your hardwork.

Events
Roberta is still the only person scheduled to be at Petco Sat July 12th. She will be bringing one of the dogs from Silverwalk Hounds which is her rescue group. Don't worry Roberta, I will fill-in if necessary. We still need volunteers for the remaining months ahead to host Adoption Day at Petco on the 2nd Sat of each month or be on KFVS12's Pet Segment on the 3rd Friday each month. If anyone would like to participate in any of these events please let Alice or I know or sign-up on the sheet posted on the cabinet doors at SHAS. You help is needed and appreciated.

June is Adopt a Shelter Cat month and we haven't gotten any offers to do extra Adoption Days at Petco. We can go anytime on any day as long as no other group is scheduled (usually Saturdays).

Pet of the Week
Cade will be this week's Pet of the Week. Next week I am planning to feature one of our Special Needs cats. Who shall it be? Homer - blind, Dakota - amputee, Sophie - incontinent? I am counting votes to determine the winner.

I have half an hour to feed my pets, get ready for work, unload my car and get to work on time. LOL I will make it!!
