Welcome to another edition of the weekly update for the week of 6/1/08. The Annual Spring Yard Sale was a huge success. Thanks to everyone who helped us put it all together. I am still waiting to hear the final count on how much was collected from the sale. We get to do it again this Fall!! Woo Hoo!!

Last week Alice took in Freeway, a kitten found on the road. He is staying with Alice for a bit before he comes out to SHAS. Today we got Powder, a white kitten and Kia. Kia comes to us by way of Janice Shirley. Janice is a good friend of SHAS and she has brought us several residents over the years and paid for their care. Some of Janice's charges were Weston & Parker, Amos, and a few others.
Outs
Last Saturday Chopper was adopted by a lady who saw him featured in the Southeast Missourian Pet of the Week. Yeah!! Ridley was featured this past week and is currently on hold. Sunday Scooby was adopted by a family who also has birds. They were not bothered by his handicap and thought it made him perfect for their home because he can't chase the birds. (Talk about Kitty Hell!) Then Monday Taffy was adopted by the lady who adopted Laurel the kitten a few years ago from us. Laurel disappeared recently from her yard. Sometimes life's lessons are hard, but teach us a lot. She has sworn Taffy will never go outdoors!! (My cats don't go outside either.)
News
Another Eagle Scout came out today to complete, I believe, his bronze badge project. '
I am pasting Alice's update below because "I am lazy today"! (LOL, Sound familiar Alice?)
"At 4 I was at SHAS and the PHONE and the people that use it are so annoying. 2 good things and 2 bad things went on. The good were that a white male kitten came in. Named him Powder because once he got a meal under his belt, he went off like a powder keg. Played and played. He was hoarse but I think that was from all the crying he had done before. The Pomeranian that was on the board got adopted through our referral and they came by to give me a hug and show me the dog. There is a Pom in there somewhere, but she is a mix. A cute one though.
Other calls were: "Take my dogs," "Take my cats and kittens and puppies," and "I can't afford to have them spayed or neutered or feed them and they are not mine anyway." Pull my hair out, or their's.
Kelly took Sally, Ursula and Sparkle to the vet this AM for various things. Ursula is leuk and FIV neg. Sparkle has been shaved and bathed and looks SO much better. Sally is very sick but on the road to recovery. I will pick her and Kia up in the AM. Don't recognize that name? She's a new one. Janice Shirley is footing her bill. Sally will have to wait to be spayed.
Now, the biggest news, the exercise equipment has arrived for the exercise pen. The guys were putting it in and 2 of the dogs went through it. Cade was not really fond of the teeter totter but Ridley liked it. They took the barrels to add to it. Also took the BIG dog house up there . Have 2 nice benches and an UP/DOWN. That we decided was too steep so they are going to modify it. Hope the dogs are grateful. All the materials were donated by Southeast Lumber.
We are blessed no matter what we sometimes think."
ALICE
I couldn't have said it better myself, Alice!
Events
June is Adopt a Shelter Cat month. Anthony & Angela Shell are scheduled to do Adoption Day at Petco on June 14. Petco has several event ideas for the area shelters to sponsor (work) I forwarded an email from Rollin a week or so ago outlining these proposed events. We can do the events as outlined or come up with something of our own. Any body have any ideas? Some of you have expressed some really great ideas for fundraisers, now's your chance!!!
Pet of the Week
I am trying to alternate cats & dogs whenever I can for the Pet of the Week. Roberta has requested Ruby be our next featured dog so she will be in the June 15th edition. Haven't had any requests except Roberta', so I asked Nicki to pick one. Bob was the first out of her mouth followed quickly by several others. So Bob it is!! (Bob was my first choice to be the first featured. Finally! lol)
Hope everyone has a great rest of the week.
Thanks
Tammy
